About Robert Race, P.E.

A Professional Engineer with over 20 years of experience in analysis, design, marketing, sales and construction of civil engineering projects. More than 10 years as an independent consultant providing professional services for a variety of clients and a variety of project needs. Once had professional licenses in over 40 states as a professional engineer signing plans for final design and construction, about 20 active licenses currently.

Several publications and technical training and sales seminars throughout the USA and in over 30 countries around the world.

Experience has involved many segments of Civil Engineering (structural, civil, geotechnical, geosynthetic) design. New product developement, technical marketing, and engineering sales have been a focal point during the professional career. Contacts are senior personnel in the government and private agencies.

Experience

2006 – Present: REA, LLC, Minneapolis, MN
Independent consulting for the design of earth structures using plastics and steel soil reinforcement, wet-cast and dry-cast concrete, and polymer bags. Projects included design submittals, design software for large block systems, design software for SRW systems, updates to SRW Block design software, concrete panel design systems, and consulting on new product innovations.

Consulting for epoxy based coatings for concrete block retaining walls that would provide a high gloss finish (burnished block look) using ultra-violet curing techniques. Consulting on an innovative ‘graffiti proof’ epoxy paint that used an soy based (environmentally friendly) solvent for cleaning.
DeltalokUSA, Inc., Minneapolis, MN
Director of Engineering for the engineering design, marketing and sales of a GREEN SOLUTION for slopes, walls, and erosion control. Trained and worked with regional sales people to setup regional distribution across the USA from Florida to Michigan to Washington through California and Texas. Prepared a ‘HITEC’ submittal for the DOT, Corps of Engineers and NRCS. Developed design software for design. Prepared many preliminary and final designs for projects.

Millenia Wall Solutions, Inc., Minneapolis, MN
Vice President for Engineering/Technical Sales for one of the most interesting prospects, a new MSE wall system, one made totally from recycled materials, one that weighed less than five pounds, and one that could look like anything the customer desired. The challenge was accepted and a new industry challenge was born.

After two years in development, it was determined the materials were not cost-effective in designing structures for earth retaining wall structures, the project was abandoned.
Keystone Retaining Wall Systems, Inc., Minneapolis, MN

Vice President: From 1986 when Keystone first introduced a segmental retaining wall (SRW) block that could be used with geosynthetic reinforcement, to 2006, the SRW industry grew to over a $3 billion industry, installing over 300 million square feet per year in the USA and International markets.

Experience in developing a new products (SRW walls), developing and promoting new design methodologies, training designers and contractors with a new system and managing international sales efforts. The use of geosynthetics and modular block walls revolutionized civil engineering from the more traditional reinforced concrete walls.

The Tensar Corporation, Atlanta, GA
Director of Engineering: In 1984 The Tensar Corporate made their first HDPE (high density polyethelyne) geogrid reinforcing manufactured in the USA at their plant in Morrow, GA. Sounding like an interesting and challenging new application, synthetic soil reinforcement, I joined Tensar. Part of the team developing geosynthetic applications, developed and perfected some of the design methods and materials used extensively today for base reinforcement, slope stability, and mechanically stabilized walls (MSE).

CRS Sirrine, Inc., Denver, CO & Raleigh, NC
Division Manager/Sr. Geotechnical Engineer: Consulting in tunneling to work on hard rock tunneling projects and get exposure to blasting and it’s affects on surface structures. The tunneling division was part of the larger CRS Sirrine Consulting, the No. One design build firm in the country. Prepared and managed field testing, bids and estimating on new projects, contracts and specifications, and business development.

Stone & Webster Engineering, Denver, CO
Geotechnical Engineer with Stone and Webster Engineering in Denver, Colorado. For the next five years I had to opportunity to work with some of the leaders in the industry (Dr. Chuck Ladd, Dr. Ralph Peck, Dr. Gary Brierly) on major dam projects, hydro-electric projects and nuclear power facilities. These projects were located all across the USA and Alaska giving exposure to varying site conditions and unusual loading conditions.

Georgia Kaolin Co., Macon, GA
Civil Engineer working as a site engineer designing steel structures, concrete structures, piping systems and providing construction management for a new plant construction for the Geogia Kaolin Company in Georgia. Wrote contract documents, specifications, plans, and managed field construction.
